Bhamidipati S.V. Prasad

Our President and Chief Operating Officer – Small Molecules business, Prasad explains how Biocon provides opportunities in diversified technologies.

The independence I enjoyed throughout my two decades at Biocon has helped me enrich myself and learn on the job.

You have had a very long stint with the company. Can you please walk us through your time at Biocon?

Yes indeed, it has been a long time at Biocon –over 20 years, actually! I distinctly remember my very first project when I joined in September 1999. It was to complete the project on the Submerged Fermentation Plant (SFP) and commission it. What I remember most about this assignment was the freedom I was given to execute the plan. It allowed me flexibility to commission the SFP successfully. This freedom, is something that fits perfectly with my style of functioning and this is something that I still have today.

Any particular memory you would like to share with us?

Yes. I was fortunate to be a part of the team that brought insulin to the plant level. The time between 2002 and 2003, was particularly special because it demonstrated to me how the leadership at Biocon was way ahead of its time. The top management team spoke passionately about insulin and antibodies and the organisation backed their vision entirely.

What was your best day at work?

It was the day I received the Bioconite of the Year award in 2006, something I am still grateful for.

The best thing about working at Biocon?

The respect we command as Bioconites. When we meet people outside the company, they look at us with a sense of awe.

Can you tell us more about your most challenging project. How did you overcome it?

The setting up and commissioning of Biocon Park has been the most challenging task so far. At the time (2005-06) , it was the biggest statin plant being set up in India. We achieved all our goals through meticulous planning and commitment. I had the good fortune to work with a fantastic team, and together we ensured the completion and commissioning of Biocon Park successfully and on time.

Biocon stands out as an organisation that provides opportunities in very diversified technologies.

Can you tell us more about your work philosophy?

I draw the circle big enough for my team members to play the game on their own terms. The independence I enjoyed throughout my two decades at Biocon has helped me enrich myself and learn on the job. I feel that I need to extend the same opportunity to my team members so that they are also allowed the space to operate with freedom.

Would you be able to tell us what it is that sets Biocon apart for you?

Biocon stands out as an organisation that provides opportunities in very diversified technologies. The lack of rigid hierarchical structures makes it an exciting workplace, where employees get to interact with different leaders and stimulate intellectual growth. Biocon’s entrepreneurial working environment is something which is unique about the company. Even after four decades the air is still thick with this culture. This culture empowers every single employee to go beyond their job description to contribute to the larger goals of the organisation.
